If could very well be that you are still new to the field of mediation, but are drawn towards it from within. Teaching is all about communicating and teaching meditation is no different. One of the wonderful things about teaching something like meditation is that you can communicate both verbally and non-verbally. In other words, you can be a guide and inspiration with the words you use or simply by your presence and energy.
This is because those who practice meditation seriously, find themselves getting more and more refined, from an energetic point of view, and others find their presence charismatic, powerful and transformative.
Of course, if you want to be a great meditation teacher, being a clear communicator is certainly a great asset. If you are not a good communicator, meditate more, it will even help resolve this issue :-).
3. Do You Enjoy Teaching?
This may sound obvious, but those who love to teach know that they love to teach quite clearly. In fact, those destined to teach have probably been teaching in one way or another all their life.
If you fall into this category great, you know you are cut out to teach, and merging that passion with your passion for meditation will certainly make you great teacher, but if you don’t all is not lost yet.
Perhaps you have not tried teaching yet, or perhaps other obstacles, such as fear or shyness have been holding you back. If so, you may wish to try your hand at teaching an informal meditation class to some friends or family to see how well it suits you. You may be surprised as how much fun it can really be to be a teacher.
4. Do You Like Helping and/or Healing Others?
Another very common trait of meditation teachers is that they enjoy uplifting, inspiring and healing others. If you have often found yourself as the sounding board for you family and friends, and if you often find yourself giving advice and life guidance to others, then becoming a meditation teacher is certainly something you ought to explore.
How to Become a Meditation Teacher:
The questions above should give you some indication of whether you are cut out to become a meditation teacher or not. They are not of course a comprehensive list, but if did find yourself answering yes to one or more of those questions, then this path can certainly be the right choice for you.
So now the next step is how exactly can you go about becoming a meditation instructor and teaching others this wonderful life transforming art? Although there are quite a few programs for becoming yoga teachers and instructors of other energy sciences, for some reason meditation teacher training and certification programs are not quite as common. I, of course, feel that meditation is the most important of these spiritual sciences and that the more meditation we have the better.
There are typically 3 choices you have with regard to becoming a meditation teacher and each of these are discussed below.
A. Traditional School Based:
In this case you choose a particular school and tradition which appeals to you and you join their program and progress via their offering to become a certified teacher of that technique. Examples of such training are Zen Training at a Monastery, Mantra Training at a traditional Hindu school such as TM or the like, etc.
Pros of Traditional School Based Meditation Teacher’s Training:
1. Master a Specific Technique:
For such training you generally become a part of that school and follow the tradition that has been practiced and refined for centuries. You will most probably come away with very concentrated training in the particular method of that school and if you stay and practice long enough you should become quite proficient at it.
2. Authentic Meditation Training:
Another advantage of such a school based training is that your training will be quite authentic and you might even become part of that particular religion or sect.
3. Long Term Teachers:
Being a part of such a program should also give you access to skilled teachers and senior students who can be your guide.
4. Supportive Community:
Another advantage of being part of such an organization is that you will also become part of the community there and will among like minded people.
Cons of Traditional School Based Meditation Certification:
Without a doubt such a training program is going to be quite expensive. At the least it will cost you $5,000 – $10,000, and depending on how long the organization requires, you might spend far more to complete the courses they demand of you.
2. Time Consuming:
Such an approach will also require several years of dedication and commitment. Becoming part of such an organization generally means you are making them an integral part of your life and are willing to dedicate many years of your life and considerable energy to them.
3. Fraud and Cults:
Of course there is always the risk of fraud and cult entrapments when you decide to join such an organization. You need to be sure that they are not just trying to ring you in and bleed you dry of all your money. Many have been disillusioned by such programs and often realize too late that they have been part of an elaborate fraud.
4. Learn Only One Technique:
Of all the drawbacks of such training, this is probably the biggest negative for someone who wishes to become a successful meditation teacher. Often certain types of meditation suit certain personalities, and learning only one kind of meditation limits your teaching skills and capabilities.
B. Teaching Meditation with Other Certifications:
Meditation is often part of other teacher’s training programs, specially yoga and other energy sciences, so, for example, by doing a yoga teacher’s training you can also go ahead and start teaching meditation. This approach is also good, but the meditation training you will receive will be quite limited and not doing a specialized meditation teacher’s training course will mean you probably don’t have mastery of this art yet.
There are very few studios that offer a complete meditation teacher’s training program. Mostly you will workshops and other such partial teachings, which do not qualify you for certification. So this brings you to what I consider to be the best option for becoming a qualified and certified meditation teacher in today’s modern age. That is the Online Meditation Teacher’s Training and Certification Program.
C. Online Meditation Teacher’s Training and Certification Course:
You may not have previously considered an online training program as the answer to your dream of becoming a mediation teacher, but you will surprised by how many successful meditation instructors today have got their certification via an online course.
Below are the pros and cons of such a course.
Drawbacks of an Online Meditation Training Course:
1. No In Person Training:
Although in the past this would have been a great disadvantage of an online program, today with the technology available on the internet, this issue is no longer as problematic. The availability of online videos, webinars, MP3, DVDs, live chat and skype, now make it entirely possible to adequately substitute a live teacher. Of course, the online course you select should have such audio and visual tools available to you, and if so you will not feel the absence of a live meditation teacher as much.
2. Self Motivation Required:
As most online training programs require self-study, you will need to be self motivated in order to succeed. While in an in studio class you would have to attend the classes and have the teacher pushing you, for a home based program, you will to have self discipline and sufficient willpower in order to do and complete the course.
3. Basic Internet Skills Needed:
In order to become a meditation teacher, you certainly should not need to become a computer wiz, but to participate in many online programs and courses, you will generally need at least some basic computer skills and might even need to have daily internet access.
Most sophisticated online courses will give you multiple methods to access the training material, such as via download or online, but to get started you will certainly need to be access this material and to study it you will certainly need to have access to a computer.
4. Delay in Questions Answered:
How to be a meditation teacher? is certainly not going to be last question you have on this journey to getting certified. You are going to have lots of questions along the way, and in a live class environment you can going to get near instant answers. For this reason you must make sure that any online program or school you select, has good support for the entire course of your training. This way you will have a chance to get your questions addressed in a timely manner.
Advantages of an Online Meditation Instructor Training Course:
1. Big Savings:
If you have some research already then you already know how expensive meditation teacher’s training can be if you join a traditional organization. It can easily be several thousand dollars. On the other hand, an online meditation training program can be less that a hundred dollars and in the case of the Mastery of Meditation Certification Program I offer, the complete program is just $47.
Yes, this is really low I know, and you wont find another course that is this affordable. I am passionate about spirituality and meditation and my life purpose is to spread this wisdom, which is why I have made my course so reasonable, but you will find other online courses that are quite cheap as well.
2. Great Flexibility:
Without a doubt if you are looking to becoming a meditation teacher, you will find this aspect of an online meditation training program invaluable. Especially if you already have a busy life.
An online course gives you the flexibility to do your studies and practice at a time of your choosing and as most such courses are self-study programs, you can also pace yourself to suit your level of expertise. This is where an online course really start to distance itself from other methods.
Being able to fit in the certification program in the midst of a very busy life, is a great benefit. Many people who dream of teaching meditation, but just don’t have the time to complete a on location, regimented, full time program, a flexible online self-study program can certainly be the answer.
3. Excellent Training Materials:
Although the first step to teaching meditation professionally is becoming certified, you will find that when you first start teaching, you will be relying quite a bit on the material you learned during your training. This is perhaps when you will really appreciate the training material from your online course. You see the training material from an online course has to be very detailed and comprehensive, as it has to take the place of a live teacher.
In an in person program the audio and visual is provided by the live teacher obviously, but in an online program the videos, DVDs, MP3s, podcasts, etc., have to take the place of the teacher, and so must be very good. The advantage to having all this training material is that it is yours to keep even after you complete your training, and so is like having your teacher with you for reference even after you complete your training.
4. Train with Loved Ones:
If you have friends or family who are also interested in becoming meditation teachers then you can all sign up together for the online course and arrange to practice together at times that suit you. This kind of flexibility is only available from an online program.
5. Stop and Start the Course:
In addition to being able to train at your own pace, another great advantage of an online meditation course is that you can stop and restart the course if needed. Often we start projects with the best of intentions, but life throws us a curve ball and can disrupt our best laid plans. If you were taking a school based certification program, you would have a very hard time stopping the course and restarting it at a later date, but with an online course this is very easy to do.
Such flexibility is often the difference between completing the course and becoming a successful meditaiton teacher versus partially completing the training, and being neither here nor there.

Well I hope this guide gives you insight into the various methods you can use to get certified and become a meditation teacher. Being a meditation teacher is a great path to take in life and if you have this calling, then I urge you to follow your heart and jump in.
